Life Seasons & Your Career
One of the most important questions you can ask yourself when considering career change is; What feels right for your career in this season of your life?
What feels most important to you, will alter depending on the ‘season of life’ you are currently in. Life’s seasons are not age-based, however they are often situational based, and what feels right for your career, will change as your life changes. You may be in the season of parenting small children, or the season of adjusting to an ‘empty nest’, or the season of overcoming a health challenge or burnout, or the season of saving for a first home or travelling on your OE. Your priorities will naturally shift and change depending on the season, and it’s important to both understand and honour this.
So, how do you ensure your career is aligned to the season you are in?
Ask yourself, what are your two top priorities in your life right now? This provides you with guidance on where to focus your time, effort, and any change/s required to be able to prioritise these things. Realistically, some activities or opportunities may need to be passed up or paused. Bringing intention to how you invest your time and energy will enable you to be fully engaged in your top priorities for this season of your life.
Ask yourself, if a positive outcome was assured, what would you feel brave enough to change or try right now? Pay attention to your response. This is the area/s of your life calling for focus and positive change.
Ensure your career and broader life, is underpinned by optimal health and wellbeing. Perhaps this even feels like your number one priority and for good reason, as without a strong foundation of wellbeing, career change can feel overwhelming.
Accept that what felt best to you last year, last month, or even last week can change. Creating lasting career happiness requires continuous tweaking, trial and error, and small and incremental change. Forcing things to work, or holding on, only delays the inevitable and will reduce your career enjoyment in the process.
Seek an alternate perspective. What are others learning or experiencing that are in (or have been in) a similar life season. What does your unique season bring the opportunity to change or try? What looking back, may you regret if you didn’t try or change during this season of your life?
It is important to regularly pause and reflect on what is and is not working for you in your career. What change are you feeling called to make when it comes to your career right now? What feels like it requires some tweaking or changing to support you best at this season in your life?
